Hello there everyone! I’m finally back after a short visit back home, ready to start the new semester at university refreshed and get back to somewhat of a routine. If I’ve learned anything these last few years, it’s that breaks are essential to personal wellbeing and self-care routines. Even though big chunks of time off aren’t a regular occurrence (although we all wish they were) it is important to make time for personal you-time, whether that be daily or weekly! Not only have I found that I am more productive in general, but it feels creatively satisfying to actually put my energy into my hobbies and passions.
At the start of the year, I was inspired by the YouTuber Lindsey Rem’s (who has an amazing channel that you all should check out), typography/lettering challenge she did in one of her graphic design courses. Everyday for 70 days, you have to produce some type of lettering or typography design whether it be a letter, number or phrase. There really isn’t too much to it; it’s being consistent and producing something everyday where the challenge comes in. I’m trying to be pretty strict with myself, but I’m also trying to be understanding that I won’t always be able to make something everyday as scheduled. After all, this is supposed to be something fun! So far, it’s been a great outlet for me to practice my pen and ink skills and it’s a great feeling of self achievement to look back on all the pages and think “Hey, I made that!” ^_^To start myself off, I’ve just found designs that I like on Pinterest and tried recreate them to the best of my ability. Creativity and originality are two of the things I usually struggle with when it comes to art and design, so for me, translating what I see on the screen onto paper is how I work on developing my artistic eye. Hopefully in the future I’ll be coming up with my own designs! Let me know down below if this challenge sounds like something right up your street and if you might start it! It would be fun to somehow keep track of each others progress along the way. If you have an interest in typography and lettering but the idea of starting something like this seems daunting, I challenge you to push through and just start a journal because the hardest part is simply starting.
Until next time!
